Does winter weather dehydrate your skin?

We here in Muskoka are so fortunate to be able to get outside for some fresh air.  My dog Sadie makes sure this happens. This time of year though, the colder dry weather likes to suck the moisture out of our skin. So if your skin is feeling sensitive or looking a little weathered.....

Now is the time to up the hydration and hold the moisture there.  Hydrating both the Dermis (deeper layer of the skin), repair and maintain the lipidic barrier junction, that separates the dermis from the epidermis (the outer layer of the skin that we see).  Then hold that water in with a lipid with a small enough molecular size that does not cause any blockages to the skin.
Does drinking more water help?

Yes and no.  With all the organs including the brain vying for water.  The skin is lucky if it gets 4% of what you drink.  Rarely is it enough.  Then one needs to consider are we getting things like HA, short for Hyaluronic Acid, from drinking water, no.  HA acts as a “humectant,” meaning: it works like a sponge to help skin retain water and “plump” the skin up and said to hold 1000 x its weight in water.  That’s one absorbent “sponge”.

Before wasting product and before sealing in this moisture, let’s not forget to exfoliate to remove the dead surface layer skin cells that will waste product trying to moisturize them.  My favorite, especially this time of year is Yonka Gommage, not only loaded with humectants but gently exfoliates even the most sensitive of skin. Aim to use this about 3x a week if time permits.
